Her intricate and highly stylized sea-inspired jewelry not only catch the eye, but seem to be a manifestation of something familiar: a warm, glistening summer memory.
Aişegül’s creative expression takes shape and blossoms in Istanbul: a city whose Eurasian duality is not unlike her own ethereal dance between the waters of her Black Sea roots, and the vibrant and ever evolving streets and markets of Turkey’s largest city. Using coral reefs, anemons and other sea beauties as her starting point, Aişegül crafts her wearable art experimenting with various materials such as s brass, gold, resin, pigments, natural stones, glass and more- to sculpturally express what she feels. With this arsenal of inspiration, creativity, beauty and a unique artistic approach, Aişegül’s creations capture the fluidity, mysticism and grace of the deep blue sea.
As a young child, Aişegül collected vibrant beads and colorful threads, by exploring the iconic Grand Bazaar and saving keepsake trinkets from friends and family. She challenged herself to construct her own creations with these little marvels- raising up her pieces and letting them catch light, as she imagined herself on the legendary Orient Express – headed towards adventure. Her curious nature led her to summers diving into the warm, celestial waters of the Indian Ocean, and a degree in chemistry: an exploration that would allow her to create her own compositions for her technique and striking pigments.
Aişegül’s approach to creating each piece illustrates a peaceful duality – manifesting an experience that can be mutually shared and understood. As she submerges herself in peaceful waters, her often poetic dreams mélange into new memories: rich, flowing colors, cool textures- in an eclectic harmony.
Aişegül artistically explores manifesting these memories with a guiding principle that art has its own universal language, and creates jewelry with such form and organic nature that it feels like it has been specially plucked from the ocean for you.
Her jewelry centers on coral as a natural underwater gem and focal point for each piece. This holds true through all her creations, whether a gold band that presents a single glistening coral, or a series of interlocking sculptures framing the neck in her signature ombre style. These reflective coral textured surfaces are created through a series of repeated and stylized micro glass spheres. Each piece is filed, soldered and coloured one by one - by the artist.
It’s no surprise that these intricate art pieces are often mistaken for real coral. The light reflecting off her glass granules gives an illusion of phosphorescence; the fluorescent like light of aquatic ecosystems that often mesmerizes us. In her process, these luminescent pigments have a different distribution of resin for each glass bead, creating a truly unique piece of wearable art for each person.
It is rare to find an artist whose work is so intimately expressed and so masterfully crafted. Each wearable sculpture, while striking and solidly built, also allows for ease and comfort for the wearer. The cool glass and soft gold, feel calming on the skin. The earrings are surprisingly light-weight, comfortable and easy to wear. Her rings, which feel like mini trophies on one’s finger slip on snugly, because of the highly polished gold plated brass. They wear comfortably as a solo cocktail piece, or can be the standout piece in a “ring party”.
In the few years since Aişegül’s atelier opened its doors in 2014, she has made waves internationally. Her pieces have been exhibited in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Lithuania, Brazil, Belgium, China, the United States and Turkey. She has been represented at various fairs throughout the globe, including SOFA Chicago, Form Miami, Art Palm Springs and Joya Barcelona. As her work grows and she adds more to her atelier to compliment her signature collection Undersurface, we patiently wait to see what new memories Aişegül Telli has in store for us.
